The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Awards is set to celebrate outstanding achievements in music, film, and literature, and Africa is well-represented.
This year's nominees include some of the continent's most talented musicians and creatives. Nigeria's Wizkid, Burna Boy, Tems, Uche Okoronkwo, O O Sangoyomi, Omotara James and Davido have all received nods, recognizing their contributions to the music and literature industry. South Africa's Tyla is also among the nominees, showcasing the country's vibrant music scene.
African artists have made a strong showing in the Outstanding International Song category. Wizkid's soulful collaboration "Piece of My Heart" featuring Brent Faiyaz, Tems Afrobeat bop "Love me Jeje", Tyla's global fusion track "Jump" featuring Gunna & Skillibeng, and Davido's feature on Chris Brown's track "Hmmm" have all earned nominations.
Wizkid and Burna Boy are vying for Outstanding Duo, Group, Collaboration, with Wizkid's "Piece of My Heart" ft Brent Faiyaz and Burna Boy's feature on Usher's "Coming Home" earning nods.
Tyla ties with Wizkid as the continent's most nominated act, also competing for Outstanding New Artist alongside Shaboozey and others.
The groundbreaking animated science fiction miniseries "Iwájú" has earned a nomination for Outstanding Animated Series at the NAACP Image Awards. Written by Olufikayo Adeola and Halima Hudson, based on a story by Adeola, Hamid Ibrahim, and Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku, and directed by Adeola, this innovative series is a testament to African storytelling and creativity. Produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and Kugali Media, "Iwájú" is a shining example of diverse voices in animation.
Lupita Nyongo is nominated in the Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance - Motion Picture category for her work on Dreamworks Animation's The Wild Robot. She is also nominated under the Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture category for her role in Paramount Pictures' Quiet Place: Day One.
Trevor Noah, the South African comedian is also nominated under the Outstanding Society and Culture Podcast category.
The Awards has also nominated African authors for Outstanding Literary Work. Uche Okoronkwo's "A Kind of Madness" and O O Sangoyomi's "Masquerade" are up for Debut Author, while Omotara James's "Song of My Softening" is nominated for Poetry.
The NAACP Image Awards will be broadcast live on BET on February 22, 2025. This prestigious event promises to be an exciting celebration of diversity and talent.
